Week 2 response to Barbara Rasero

The ideas in this book are familiar to me and I have experienced many iterations of living the life of possibility - the EMDT program is the latest in a long line of out of the box decisions I’ve made. The really ‘big one’ was 15 yrs. ago, when I quit my job as a director in an ad agency and went to seminary. There, contrary to what some might believe, I learned more about out of the box thinking. In fact, out of the box is a way of seeing and living a spiritually based life. Zanders book is really about the human spirit and how to recognize, nurture, and materialize the gifts of this life and share them in the world. He shows that we deeply need love and acceptance and are dependent upon each other to realize our gifts.

Living b
y the rules and the scales of measurement is a necessary part of living in a family of community, but rules become constricting if we do not reinvent them as we grow. Rules help to channel and contain chaos, but the creative process is not that orderly! Ideas need free space to form and shared, and bodies need freedom to move erratically to learn the nuances and elegant moves of a musician, artist, or athlete. As teachers, we need to manage the tensions between chaos and order and understand not just the appropriate balance for a particular age group, but also to be sensitive to the human psyche of each child’s potential and limits. This is a tall order
Starting out with and A, I think, makes the process more fluid and child based. It assumes the wholeness of the student first and allows room for both potential and limits, rules and creativity, and connotes learning as an individual process rather than static corporately established goals. An A, assumes the norm, the acceptable as a given, and as a base form which to depart, allowing the space for vision.
To see ourselves as contributors to a larger good means that we acknowledge our own needs and the needs of others, and how these inter-relate, interact, and integrate. In the classroom, role-playing can lead to greater understanding of one’s gifts and ability to use them in service to others. Contribution is ability to respond to a need or gap. First and foremost, it’s a responsibility to understand and acknowledgment of our own needs for help and growth. Next, is the acknowledgement of our gifts, how and with whom to share them. I was told by a wise professor, that our gifts follow our needs; meaning, these two are inextricably linked and how we find and can offer our authentic selves in community.

Barbara, I think you write so eloquently that it feels as if you are talking to me rather than me reading your words on a screen. Leaving a job to push yourself spiritually is a bold decision that I must commend you for. I like your thoughts about each chapter. I think the wisdom you provide though your blog makes me want take one of your courses to get a feel of what your students experience.

Week 1 Wimba archive

Via Flickr

Watching the Wimba archive really answered a lot of questions I had going into this Media Asset Creation.  I appreciate Professor Bustillos taking the time during the first Wimba to explain what the course is and is not as he went through the month.  I puts my mind at ease as he went through the projects of the course now so I know what to expect in the up coming weeks.  The CBR website is a place that may take me a while as I used to have all my references there but deleted them as we were writing the literature  review to match the references I used in the paper.  I am going back to see if I can find my other references so I can include them on that page, but I do like how that work will get put in a place.

The leadership/publishing project is bringing some concerns as I heard about this when we first started and asked my legal department about this so I was prepared.  The only response I got was regarding the companies confidentiality policy and that is written in a way that I feel I may need to put some good time and effort to ensure that I can provide enough information to get my point across without providing too much information about the company and how we conduct business.   Since it is a few weeks away I hope that I can finish all the other projects with plenty of time to focus on that work.

Reading Reflection:
What an interesting topic...copyright... I had no idea so much had to go into a piece of material that is or is not officially copyrighted. I had always understood that you need to always cite your work and give credit to where it is due but I must say...it is overwhelming and somewhat...scary to think of how these copyright laws play into affect. The videos that Mr. Bustillos has put together for our copyright assignments were very methodically put together...going from what is copyright, to what is going on with it, to how people perceive it as, and even to where it was, is, and is going to help this madness...but what hit me the hardest was the TED video that was the closing video...we NEED to and MUST inform our students of what they are falling into of using copyrighted material wrongfully.
Watching these videos fall one into another and how people around the world are so creative is amazing. Isn't that what we want our children and learners to grow into? Working, intelligent, and creative leaders of our future? But to also think about how if they are to try these things to be caught by this copyright law is frightening. Everyone needs to be more aware of the use of fair use and everyone, including myself, needs to be understand the use of copyrighted material.
It is pretty amazing the type of creators we do have in our world that want our world to continue to grow and allow people to use their creative minds in a way that others will not regret being a part of. Creative commons and their attribute towards copyright is amazing. Why had no one thought of something like this earlier...to find agree on specific labels to be attached to work so that learners and viewers and add or share?...Thinking to the historical showing of Dr. Martin Luther King and allowing that to be on the open domain to allow our time of learners see what the world use to be and not relive what it went through is an amazing message and even that needs to be shared.

Personal Reflection:
What I think is overwhelming is...how is one to know if they are accidentally using something that is copyrighted or not...Just thinking about how there are millions of movies in the world and if I was to become an independent filmmaker and make a film to later find out it is similar to one that was made 20 years ago that was copyrighted?! Now that's scary! I feel that our world is full of creative people that should be allowed to manipulate and change ideas or things that are already made to keep our creative senses going but I agree as well that if someone had already made it...credit needs to be due. But what if you didn't know?
Watching the Disney video really made me reflect and think...how is this video not illegal...it is using copyrighted material all produced by Disney but as I thought deeper into what I was watching...it is fair use from what I understand of it...because it is only using small snippets of each video...but totally interesting to really think about...
Another interesting part to our copyright assignment was the reflection of the PBS showing of Dr. Martin Luther King's film clip on how it is no longer able to be broadcasted on tv NOR produced through DVD due to copyright laws. This is our HISTORY and it needs to continue to be a part of our history but if it is something that is not available...how is this fair for our learners and our future leaders of our world to not experience this?...I know this is corny...but it just about brought tears to my eyes...
Watching the first few videos really brought back a lot of memories for me as a child. My family and I traveled a lot of China when I was young and I remember walking the street vendors with my family and people selling thousands of dvd's and cd's...of course all illegally burned and downloaded....It was such a norm there in China...it is really crazy to think about now as an adult learning about these copyright laws. It is forsure not a norm here but there it was soooo common. Reading about how numbers were produced by researchers about how many billions of dollars and thousands of jobs were lost in the U.S. due to people illegally downloading and etc...I must agree with the article posted that it can't all be true...maybe not the U.S. but other countries have been doing this for centuries before it hit big in the U.S. I talked to my parents tonight about this and they can remember their childhoods filled with these streets of illegal vendor sellings of cd's and dvd's. It is really interesting to think about how my life has been impacted and the overall idea of these copyright laws.

We NEED to and MUST inform our learners...they need to know...and it is our job to do so.

@ Helen, Week 1 reading post I totally understand how you feel regarding the vendors selling their illegal dvd's and cd's as part of the norm growing up. I saw the same thing growing up and its a conflict of cultures and business. I agree with how the readings flowed logically and it helped me understand the reading as well. I do have to hand it to you as a educator to have to think about copyright to make your point to your students. I think your concerns about the creativity of the future may be at risk because of the copyright concerns. All we can do is provide guidance and education to help them understand the need to research the environment as we tread into water.

Week 1 comment @ Tiffany (week 1 reading: copyright

Copyright- an creators protection (If you can create it, you can protect it)

This is one word that could get you in a lot of trouble if you are not careful. This week I learned that copyright goes beyond books, articles, and music but a dance could also be copyrighted. I remember in undergrad always trying to keep an account of everything I researched to get information for our big papers that we had in Music History. Copyright is not always a fun thing to do but at least once you really get it, you know what to do and what not to do. In writing a research paper, you must cite all of your sources so that it is very clear that some of the information you are using is not your own.

Certain citations have specific requirements. If you repeat a statement that you found in a book or article you have to cite the book and page that you got the quote from. Pretty much every quote that is not yours has to be cited with a page number and the author. This is only a certain citation system. I am a songwriter and I never thought about how important it was for an author or even a dance creator to protect their works.

I am glad that copyright allows you to protect what is yours, it is kind of like an alarm system for creators.

Tiffany- I like how you address the how copyright can benefit you as an artist. Keeping your work safe for you can put your mind at ease. Including how you used the citations in your undergrad work is great to have your students understand that you are protecting them and not just requiring it to create extra work. I would like to hear your thoughts on the other readings like creative commons or how fair usage helps you as an artist as well. I like how you see the positive of copyright as many people find copyright frustrating.

Wk1 Reading- Copyright issues

Via Flickr
The concept of copyright is confusing if you don't have all the information.  From watching all the information provided I still think there is an enormous amount of information regarding copyrights that I can still learn.  The biggest understanding I took away from the reading was how copyright laws are still changing and almost everyone is affected by it because of the internet.  With sharing sites like creative commons out there I feel hopeful that copyrights will not totally limit the creative process.

Hearing the copyrights have gone from 14 years to 100 years for companies worries me to what the future of creative media will be if new artists worry about being sued for using copyright content to create new works of art.  The video A fair(y) use tale brought a smile to my face because it uses the law to push the boundaries of copyright laws to prove a point and teach viewers about how fair use can be used as a defense in copyright law cases.

Working for a company and not being an educator creating educational media is easier to use since my target audience has more knowledge about the world and I can use photos and images within the company to prove my points.  For educators the difficult is how can I get my students to understand a point without violating a potential copyright at the same time.  We all understand popular culture and students would love to have that as a reference point for learning, so the challenge is on the educator to be able to relate the information in a way that does not violate any copyrights but still gets the message across.

ETC Final Project

For the final project for this class I used Yammer with my trainers to see how they can use this resource both at work and at home.  Though I would love to show you the work that they did within the site I would not risk the confidentiality since this was done using company assests and that would be a violation of company policy.  The use of Yammer as a social learning tool is slow to start as many trainers will only use this when they are at work and time allows.  Here is a video that explains why I think social networking in the workplace will be the next form of communication.

There is a little trouble embedding videos so here is the video.

Or you can click here to see the video in a different site.

1.     Target Audience- Part time classroom trainers from four different departments
2.     Materials-  Internet access, company emails
3.     Objective- Assess their facilitation skills and class management skills.
4.     Procedure- Surveyed trainers for next development session and started a group for them to communicate in
5.     Web 2.0 Tool- Yammer.com
6.     Social Participation- group chats and learning after classes.
7.     Making Connections- four different departments all have different issues but situations have occurred at different times.  Group allows them to ask questions and discuss solutions.
8.     Create- Solutions to questions and reflection on personal classes
9.     Reflection- After classes allowing time to reflect through a post about how they felt about the class and feedback.

The use of Yammer as a tool has only started and as the months go by the trainers will continue to use Yammer as a way to communicate when they don't have the luxury of face-to-face time with each other.
